Last year&#8217;s plan was to go from half marathon to ultra marathon and I made it.<\/p>\n<p>2015 has been the year of the &#8220;firsts&#8221;: first marathon, first 50k, first 50 miles, first multi-stage race and unfortunately first serious injury.<\/p>\n<p>If it had not been for the last 2 months where I could not run due to injury, the rest of the year I basically run 6 times a week (except for race recovery and tapering).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-641 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/luigifumero.com\/run\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/spottheinjury.png\" alt=\"spotTheInjury\" width=\"728\" height=\"146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/luigifumero.com\/run\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/spottheinjury.png 728w, https:\/\/luigifumero.com\/run\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/spottheinjury-300x60.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Here is my 2015 in numbers:<\/h3>\n<p>I have run a total of <strong>3801 km <\/strong>for a total of<strong> 312 hours.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/2015.strava.com\/video\/gaLwhQq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Here <\/a>is the usual Strava end of year movie.<\/p>\n<p>I ran <strong>14 races<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One 50 mile race<\/li>\n<li>One 50 k race<\/li>\n<li>One 3 day event (84 miles in total)<\/li>\n<li>4 marathons<\/li>\n<li>2 half marathons<\/li>\n<li>One 10 mile race<\/li>\n<li>2 Park Runs (5k)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-723\" src=\"http:\/\/luigifumero.com\/run\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/medals1.jpg\" alt=\"medals\" width=\"1632\" height=\"1224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/luigifumero.com\/run\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/medals1.jpg 1632w, https:\/\/luigifumero.com\/run\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/medals1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/luigifumero.com\/run\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/medals1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/luigifumero.com\/run\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/medals1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/luigifumero.com\/run\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/medals1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/luigifumero.com\/run\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/medals1-1200x900.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1632px) 100vw, 1632px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Here is a summary:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>January<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I ran my first marathon, the <a href=\"http:\/\/rungigettorun.com\/2015\/01\/12\/a-muddy-emotional-rollercoaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trailscape Ashurst Trail Marathon<\/a>, where I learnt that I was not very good at pacing at all!<\/p>\n<p><strong>February<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I ran my second marathon, the <a href=\"http:\/\/rungigettorun.com\/2015\/02\/22\/trailscape-wendover-trail-marathon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trailscape Wendover Trail Marathon<\/a>, where I learnt that the stomach can be your worst enemy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>March<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I ran my third marathon, the <a href=\"http:\/\/rungigettorun.com\/2015\/03\/16\/another-marathon-in-the-bag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thames Meander Marathon<\/a>, were I did my PB but I was not very happy at the end as I (again) completely paced it wrong.<\/p>\n<p><strong>April<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Training got serious for the NDW50 and started running well over 100k per week. I did my first back to back long runs during the week ends and ran my first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.strava.com\/activities\/292090687\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">50k in training<\/a> (and felt like superman)<\/p>\n<p><strong>May<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;awesomest&#8221; month of the year where I ran my first ultra, the North <a href=\"http:\/\/rungigettorun.com\/2015\/05\/20\/north-downs-way-50\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Downs Way 50 mile race<\/a>. I was an amazing experience and I was hooked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>June<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I recovered fast, dedicated the month to speed training, ran a Bushy Park Run to check progress (matched my Bushy PB) and then ran the <a href=\"http:\/\/rungigettorun.com\/2015\/06\/30\/richmond-park-half-marathon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Richmond Park Half Marathon<\/a> where I really enjoyed competing and finished 9th.<\/p>\n<p><strong>July<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I went a bit crazy and ran a marathon one week and a half marathon the week after. In the <a href=\"http:\/\/rungigettorun.com\/2015\/07\/21\/north-downs-way-marathon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Downs Way Marathon<\/a> I discovered that the NDW is a killer whatever the distance and that pacing was still unknown to me.<\/p>\n<p>Pacing was not needed at the <a href=\"http:\/\/rungigettorun.com\/2015\/07\/29\/wimbledon-common-half-marathon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wimbledon Common Half Marathon<\/a> where I just went as fast as I could all the time, finishing 9th and almost beating my PB (the mud made it hard).<\/p>\n<p><strong>August<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I took an holiday from racing by did a lot of running. I explored part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/rungigettorun.com\/2015\/08\/14\/adventuring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ridgeway<\/a> and part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/rungigettorun.com\/2015\/08\/18\/adventuring-part-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">South Downs Way<\/a> (beautiful). Then I ran a lot in Italy, mostly running from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rungigettorun.com\/2015\/09\/11\/holidays\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">crazy wild boars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>September<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I ran the <a href=\"http:\/\/rungigettorun.com\/2015\/10\/01\/high-weald-challenge-50k-ultra-trail\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">High Weald Challenge 50k Ultra<\/a> where I really enjoyed the company of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/craigjmcelroy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Craig<\/a>, but was not too pleased with the last 10k.<\/p>\n<p><strong>October<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I ran the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rungigettorun.com\/2015\/10\/04\/a-handful-of-pbs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Royal Borough of Kingston 10 mile<\/a> race where I finished 14th and got new PBs on 10k, 15k and 10 miles, but then took ages to recover from.<\/p>\n<p><strong>November<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another super awesome race! I did the <a href=\"http:\/\/rungigettorun.com\/2015\/11\/30\/druid-challenge-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Druid Challenge<\/a>, my first multi stage event, I loved every second of it, ran 84 miles, finished 13th, but picked up a nasty shin injury.<\/p>\n<p><strong>December<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sad month. I only ran 5k here and there just to check the injury but things did not get any better. Luckily the rest of the year has been so amazing I did not mind losing 1.5 months of running.<\/p>\n<h3>What&#8217;s next?<\/h3>\n<p>In 2016 I will probably race a bit less (I already cancelled the January marathon due to the injury), but I will do more longer races. I have already entered all four 50 mile races from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centurionrunning.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centurion Running<\/a> and I will therefore try to do the Grand Slam of 50s. In between I will definitely run some more marathons, maybe a couple of half (the local ones) and hopefully I will help my friends <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/unknowndest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Davide <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ManuOnTrail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manu <\/a>pacing them when they come here to run the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centurionrunning.com\/north-downs-way-100-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NDW100 <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centurionrunning.com\/south-downs-way-100-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SDW100 <\/a>respectively.<\/p>\n<p>I hope you will have a wonderful 2016.
