I\u2019ll just make a list of things I&#8217;ve learnt:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Injuries do not go away if you ignore them: as soon as I felt slightly better I tried running, even doing 15k sometimes. It was very silly of me.<\/li>\n<li>When doctors say you should not run for 2 months they mean 2 months, not 1<\/li>\n<li>Injuries do not come alone: I had a very bad shin splints but also an ankle impingement. When one was improving, the other was getting worse and vice versa. Learning which one is causing a certain bit of pain and how to tackle it really helps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_737\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-737\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-737\" src=\"http:\/\/luigifumero.com\/run\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/img_7066.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"IMG_7066\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-737\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Big Foot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>Physios are really good for you: I went for half a dozen sessions at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.physioandtherapylondon.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Physio&amp;Therapy<\/a> in Teddington and I cannot recommend them enough<\/li>\n<li>Stretching and strength exercises are boring but useful: I spent countless evening doing more than an hour of lifting my toes to strengthen my feet and other exercises. One day I might do a post with suggestions on the best exercises and stretching.<\/li>\n<li>Cross training can make you go less crazy: I did quite a lot of cycling and swimming when I finally gave up running for a longer period. At least I had a way of burning some energy and it is actually fun too. Especially cycling in Richmond Park early in the morning. Better leave it to the experts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id='gallery-2' class='gallery galleryid-725 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/luigifumero.com\/run\/2016\/06\/05\/i-am-back\/img_7355\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/luigifumero.com\/run\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/img_7355-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" aria-describedby=\"gallery-2-743\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<figcaption class='wp-caption-text gallery-caption' id='gallery-2-743'>\n\t\t\t\tApplied by me, no effect\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/luigifumero.com\/run\/2016\/06\/05\/i-am-back\/img_7439\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/luigifumero.com\/run\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/img_7439-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" aria-describedby=\"gallery-2-744\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<figcaption class='wp-caption-text gallery-caption' id='gallery-2-744'>\n\t\t\t\tApplied by an expert, very useful\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<ul>\n<li>You can still wake up at 5am and do something: the first month I made a mobile game all by myself (if I had known I had 4 more months of not running I would have done it better, but if you want it you can download it <a href=\"http:\/\/skipabit.com\/games\/neon-spaceman\/\">here<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Being able to run 5k again without suffering is so beautiful it will make you almost cry<\/li>\n<li>Going back to running 100k a week takes ages but you can take advantage of slower and shorter runs to work on your cadence, form\u00a0and experiment with food.<\/li>\n<li>Cancelling races is really tough: I had to give up on 2 marathons and the first 2 Centurion\u2019s 50 milers. So no Grand Slam for me this year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So we are in June now and finally, more than 6 months from the <a href=\"http:\/\/rungigettorun.com\/2015\/11\/30\/druid-challenge-2015\/\">Druid Challenge<\/a>, I am running again six days a week. The last couple of weeks around 100k each, with some adventures on trails too. The injuries are not completely gone away, but every day is better and I think I now know how much I can push (as if I&#8217;ve never said this before).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-746 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/luigifumero.com\/run\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/img_7918.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/luigifumero.com\/run\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/img_7918.jpg 320w, https:\/\/luigifumero.com\/run\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/img_7918-300x105.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I am going to do my first race in July. I am doing the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hermesrunning.com\/races\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hermes Running<\/a> North Downs Way Marathon <a href=\"http:\/\/rungigettorun.com\/2015\/07\/21\/north-downs-way-marathon\/\">again<\/a>. This time I was given a free entry by <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.runningheroes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RunningHeroes.com<\/a> (thank you very much) and I will try not to kill myself in the first half like I did last year.<\/p>\n<p>But first I will be pacing my friend <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ManuOnTrail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@manuontrail<\/a> in the last 30 miles of the South Downs Way 100 next weekend. I cannot wait. It will be an adventure, most likely a night time adventure on some of the best trails around here.<\/p>\n<p>I have more races coming up and more pacing duty for friends, but I am sure I will do loads of posts about those in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>Stay tuned: I am back!
